Educational Theater Internships at The Rose Theater
Current Positions
The Rose Theater is one of the largest professional theaters for young audiences in the country. We are housed in a restored 1927 vaudeville theater and our programming includes a main stage season, two national tours, an award-winning teen theater program, a summer youth theater program, and an extensive arts educational program for children ages four to 18.
Each year (June-May), The Rose hires between six to ten college and graduate students for its educational theater internship program. The program is designed to educate young people about careers in theater (specifically educational theater) and to increase their job experience within a professional theater setting. Our former interns are now teaching high school theater, acting on our national tours, working as contract teachers for The Rose or other professional children’s theaters, getting their MFA in children’s theater from top graduate schools, and even working full time as teaching artists at The Rose. All interns receive a competitive stipend and intern classes (covering lesson plans, resumes, classroom management, etc.) Many also receive free housing.
College Internships
This internship is for college students majoring in theater or education who wish to gain professional theater experience. Each year, The Rose hires two to four rising college sophomores and juniors for this program. Each intern contributes over 200 hours during a summer or a semester and will work as an assistant director or teacher for our theater camps. They will also help research study guide content, help run our drama club, and complete a mock audition or interview with our artistic director.
Educational Theater Summer Internships
Each year, The Rose hires four to six rising college seniors, recent graduates, or graduate students for its summer Educational Theater internship program. This program is for students who want to enter educational theater (such as becoming a high school drama teacher, an elementary school drama specialist, or working for a professional children’s theater) as a career. These students work full time (400 hours) during the summer and are responsible for assisting with drama classes, working as counselors at our theater camp, helping with study guides, coordinating publicity for summer youth shows, choreographing or music directing a youth show, and completing an audition with our artistic director.
Teaching Artist School Year Internships
The Rose hires 2 to 4 recent college graduates for its teaching artist internship program each year. This program is for students who want to enter educational theater (such as becoming a high school drama teacher, an elementary school drama specialist, enter graduate school in TYA, or working for a professional children’s theater) as a career. These students work full time (400 hours) during the nine-month school year (Sept-May) and are responsible for assisting with drama classes, working after-school programs with “at-risk” middle school students, helping with study guides, acting, stage managing or assistant directing for one or two main stage productions, co-directing a teen theater production, performing in a Theater in Education touring play, and leading workshops with school groups.
Interested applicants should send a letter of interest, a sample lesson plan, and a current resume to the address below. The resume should include education, experience working with children, and theater experience.
