Notes from the Director
The Intern Project is a unique show in our teen season: our very talented
and very diverse Rose Theater High School Interns are involved in every part
of the process of putting together this production, from selecting the
script to planning the staging to developing the technical design for the
stage. This year, our Teen Interns decided to take on celebrated playwright
José Cruz González’s unique – and uniquely challenging – Lily Plants a
Garden. One of several plays we read back in the summer, this one grabbed
our attention; it’s quirky, meaningful, and there’s so much importance in
details. We even got the privilege of speaking to Mr. González during one of
our evening rehearsals, and he was kind enough to have a Q&A session with us
and give us some insights as to what kind of message this play sends.
Despite being a show that runs under an hour, with all its fantastical
elements, putting this show on was no easy feat! The last six weeks have
passed in a whirlwind of making blocking decisions, tripping over made-up
words, and stretching our imaginations to the limit. The play centers around
a make-believe world created by a young girl out of broken and rejected
objects. In that world, there is a war between the Wulumans, who are more
animal-like, come out at night, and love to howl at the moon; and the
Zobeings, who are more plant-like, feel at home in the sunlight, and love
things that grow. Caught in the middle is Lily, a Zobeing child who was
found and raised by Wulumans. When the neighbors discover that Lily owns a
“dangerous” bluzulu seed, life for the Wuluman family gets much more
difficult.
The cast chose this show because, in spite of its whimsical elements, there
is a clear message about bridging our differences that speaks to us as
members of the human race, visible even through fur, tusks, and red-radish
hair.
We hope you enjoy Lily Plants a Garden. All you need is the ability to
create something out of nothing… or just a little imagination. Enjoy the
show!
