SHOW GUIDE: Goosebumps

It’s almost time for our next production, R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps: The Phantom of the Auditorium – The Musical, a musical based on one of the books from the popular scary series by R. L. Stine.

We’ve assembled some special information to help you and your family to get ready for the upcoming performance. Before you go to the show, you might want to take a few moments to review this “Know Before You Go” Guide so everyone will know what to expect from the performance!

The Story You Will See

We know Rose Kids who love musical theater to death…but would you really DIE to be on stage?

The students of Woods Mill Middle School really love to put on a show, and no one is more excited to tackle the next big Drama Club production than best friends and drama-devotees Brooke and Zeke. Especially since this year they just know they are going to be the leads.

But what’s up with that spooky script that Ms. Walker, the theater director has chosen—the one that her great grandmother tried to stage but was never performed because of mysterious mayhem plaguing rehearsals? And what about that never-used creepy trap door with an elevator to the terrifying tunnels below the stage—is it even safe? And
what about the strange–and strangely evil–voices that echo in the theater, and the wickedly weird things that keep happening during every single rehearsal?

With such super-scary goings-on, will the show go on or will the show go off the rails taking everyone with it?? Join the fright-filled fun—just in time for Halloween!—as the show-within-a-show young cast of “The Phantom of the Auditorium” tries to survive until Opening Night in this terrifying tale of musical mayhem from the mind of R.L. Stine.

We’ve heard of “Stage Fright!” but—SERIOUSLY, you guys—this is ridiculous!

This production is meant to be a little spooky with mysterious characters, a plot about a student in the past who may have died, and a lot of creepy
coincidences. While you can expect that this production will be suitable for children like all Rose Theater productions, some young audience members may get frightened. You may want to prepare members of your family for this possibility (and have a plan ahead of time for what to do if the scary story is too much for them).
The story is very loosely based on The Phantom of the Opera, and you can expect that a phantom character will be menacing the students in the show as they are trying to prepare their play!
There are references to a student who was killed in the past during a theater production at the high school. If your young person is frightened by “ghost stories” you might want to prepare them for the intentionally frightening story!
Some people may find that the theater teacher, Ms. Walker, may not be as responsible as one would hope when it comes to being a vigilant “Adult in Charge” regarding her students and their safety. Her slightly distracted character is a part of creating the tense atmosphere of the story, but you may want to discuss with your young person whether or not you think she could have done a better job as a professional educator!
The scares during the story and the climax of the play when the true story of the phantom is revealed may be too intense for some young audience members.

This musical is based on one of the books in the popular Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine. His books have also been adapted into several movies and television series. This particular adaptation was adapted from Goosebumps, Book #20: Phantom of the Auditorium, first published in October of 1994. The book and lyrics are by John Maclay with music and lyrics by Danny Abosch.

Theater Location

The Rose is located in downtown Omaha at 2001 Farnam Street on the southwest corner of 20th & Farnam Streets.

Directions

From west Omaha, take I-80 East to 1-480 North and exit onto 20th Street. The Rose is located on Farnam Street, approximately three blocks south of the 20th Street exit.

Convenient Parking

The closest and most convenient parking is available for $2 in the garage at 19th & Harney, courtesy of the Omaha Douglas Public Building Commission (1910 Harney St., Omaha, NE 68102). Parking meters surrounding the theater are active from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with free parking available on Sundays and holidays. A variety of parking lots are available around the theater, as well, ranging in cost from $2-$5.

A few minutes after the performance, our actors will conduct a Question & Answer session from the stage. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the scenery, costumes, special effects, and other aspects of the production. The actors may even have a question or two for you about the story.

Some performers will be available after the show to say hello, pose in pictures, and sign their
autographs for you. You can meet them on the mezzanine level right outside the entrance to our balcony level seats.
