SPOT SAYS: A Review of "Go, Dog. Go!"

Whenever a show about dogs comes to The Rose, I get SUPER excited! Go, Dog. Go!, based on the popular children’s book, opened The Rose’s 70th season up with a BARK! This paw-sitively perfect story of pups in per-pet-ual motion gave me everything I wanted and more! I loved the zany antics of all the colorful dogs, including Blue Dog (Brissa Lopez), Red Dog (Matthew Kischer), Yellow Dog (Jessica Burrill-Logue), Green Dog (Jake Parker) and Spotted Dog (Miriam Gutierrez). They were led by MC Dog (Al Kroeten), who took them on a journey to work, play, eat, laugh and learn with the audience! These creative canines showcased their talents of juggling, riding a tricycle, hula-hooping, singing, playing baseball, dancing and most of all, creating a fun-filled hour for families! But can a story without much of a plot turn into an amazing play? I say ABSOLUTELY, but don’t forget to compliment Hattie (Miriam Gutierrez), on her eccentric collection of ever-changing hats!

Go, Dog. Go! taught us about many of the sensory contrasts in our lives, all with a musical melody that pleased to my floppy ears. The pups taught us that the sun is yellow and bright, while the moon is blue and dark, and sometimes we have to sleep when the moon comes out. When Green Dog is in a yellow tree, we are shown the contrasts of colors and how they look beside each other. We learned about different tools and the sounds they make, whiched turned into my favorite number of the entire show! The physical comedy and vaudeville-style musical numbers kept me and my entire family of chihuahua’s entranced. This is one you don’t want to miss.

Directed by Jess Jung, the story was able to flourish and grow throughout the process. Everything from the set design, lighting and costumes brought this book to life. It was uber-colorful, vivid and just bright enough to capture that magic of the P.D. Eastman classic. The production team at The Rose always does a phenomenal job bringing their shows, and stage to life, and I have to credit them for their beautiful work.

If you plan to see Go, Dog. Go!, you could also grab a Rose Membership for the 70th season! It is the best deal in Omaha! $105 for a family of four, with plenty of other options for larger families! Just call The Box Office at 402-345-4849 or visit rosetheater.org! Who knows, maybe we will run into each other at a show!

Until next time,
SPOT
